Local Musicians Union to Furnish Orchestra to Teen-Agers Clubs

A series of free dances for teen-agers has been made possible through the generosity of the Musicians Protective Union, Local 493. A.F. of M.. it was announced this week by the Jackson St. Community Council, which is acting as coordinator for the affairs

The dances, approximately ten of them. will be held between October 31 and December 31. 1947, and will be sponsored by agencies and organizations carrying on teen-age programs.

Utilizing money from the Transcription Fund of the national union, the American Federation of Musicians, of which James Petrillo is president, the local will provide an orchestra for any teen-age dance, properly sponsored, for which no admission is charged.

"This money is made available by the national union in order to promote the educational. social and cultural life of the community." Mr. Gerald Wells. president of Local 493. explained. "I know of no finer way to spend this fund than by providing wholesome, well-conducted recreation for young people of all racial groups. We are particularly anxious that dances be sponsored for youth that would not otherwise have the opportunity of enjoying good. live music."

Six organizations have already scheduled dances or other affairs under this arrangement.

The first will be a carnival for teen-agers to be held in Yesler Terrace on Hallowe'en, Oct. 31. The East Madison YMCA is planning a dance on Nov. 7. The night before Armistice Day, Nov. 10 has been reserved by Educational Center, and on Nov. 14, a dance expected to reach most of the Japanese youth will be held in the Buddhist Church, sponsored by the Lotus Starlets. The Phyllis Wheatley YWCA is planning a pre-holiday dance on Dec. 19.

The Duwamish Bend community has reserved Dec. 5 for a com- munity sponsored teen-age dance.

The Jackson St. Community Council is taking care of the sche- duling of these activities. Four dates are still open, according to Mrs. Ruth Manca. Executive Secretary.
