Full Text

ONE evening, as with **-** walking
My thoughts engag'd, my mind serene,
Full in the path an insect glitt'ring,
Chang'd a while the mental scene.--
Perhaps benevolence, slightly moving.
Or, (not to trace the cause in pride,)
Something like instinct interposing,
Unconscious, turn'd my feet aside.--
Not so my fair companion stopp'd,
But gently drew her arm from mine,
And turning, (while I fondly look'd,)
She mov'd the insect to the green.--
Pleas'd I beheld, as in the deed
Philanthropy so clearly shone;
Yet more, when gracefully the aid

'Twas curiosity alone.--
