Vegetable Producers Face Big Army Task

Vegetable producers and canners of the southeast may soon be helping other branches of the industry answer the call of the Army for 50,000,000 pounds of quick frozen vegetables from the 1943 crop it was revealed today by the quartermaster branch, Fourth Service Command.

If the request is met as it is expected to be, according to Quartermaster officers, the big order will benefit the nation's growers and canners as well as the frozen food industry because the Army's use of frozen foods in this country will result in either releasing a large supply of canned foods to meet ever increasing demands of the troops overseas, or it will result in a diversion of raw vegetables from canning to freezing.

Such diversion it is declared, would save about 115,000 pounds of tin and 10,000,000 pounds of new steel. The saving in new steel alone would be enough to build nearly 200 medium sized tanks.

The army's tentative requirements for next year include 6,000,000 pounds of snap beans, 10,000,000 pounds of lima beans, 4,000,000 pounds of cut corn, 23,000,000 pounds of green peas and nearly 10,000,000 pounds of spinach.
