Event Details
The Charleston Courier publishes two important decrees, issued by the captain general of Cuba, in 1818, under the royal authority of Spain, declaring the grants of land to the Duke de Alagon and others, to be unalienable. The assignee of the duke is making large sales in this country. Col. Hamilton informs that among papers detained by Gen. Jackson from governor Coppinger, many important royal decrees were found, defining powers of Spanish governors, enabling commissioners to compare grants with authority. Gen. Jackson's vigilance conjectured to have preserved over one million acres for the US.
