NEW YORK, MARCH 6.

Singular Occurrence.—Two or three days since, a black man received his pay as steward of a ship, amounting to 8 dollars in ten dollar bills. A companion, another black, advised him to buy a pocket-book to keep the money in. Accordingly they went together in the evening to the store of a Mr. I——, and got one in which the bills were deposited. Directly after leaving the store the steward made an outcry that he was robbed, and the fellow had stolen the pocket book. The fellow was pursued and taken, carried to the watch house and examined; but no book nor money being found upon him, the captain of the watch was about discharging him. Mr. J. the grocer, coming in at this time and two doses of tartar-emetic being found in the fellow's pocket, on the suggestion of Mr. I. and suspicion of their intent, the captain had them administered to the prisoner: and the consequence was, the production of 7 of the 8 bills, in tolerable condition, from the fellow's stomach, who was thereupon committed to Bridewell, the keeper of which did not despair of being able to get the 8th.
