MEXICO AND CAMPEACHY

Advices from Yucatan have been received at New Orleans to the 18th February. They confirm the late news of the result of the battle of Chete and the death of General Aulrale, on the day after the battle. On the 5th inst. the town of China was burned by the Yucatan Indians, and the Mexicans to the number of two thousand, evacuated the 'Heights,' and marched into Larmy, their Head Quarters of their army. A few days later, the Mexican war steamer Guadaloupe, attempted to cut off a number of small sloops which were entering the harbor of Campeachy with provisions for the city. Three gun boats, mounting each two brass twenty four pounders, were immediately sent to their relief and at once engaged the steamer to 'turn tail' and run into Laguna for safety. The boats were not damaged by the steamer's shots most of which went passed over their heads where exploded in the air or water, doing no damage whatever.

"Martial law was declared in the city of Campeachy on the 5th, and a rumor prevailed that it would be proclaimed throughout the province. The seamen were in fine spirits, well supplied with all the munitions of war, and ready to see the city razed to the ground sooner than surrender—confident of their ability to hold out as long as Mexico can keep up the siege."
