Many of the sufferers in the late fire have lost all they possessed in the world, and are driven from a state of ease and competence, to that of dependence and want. Their situation call loudly on the benevolence of their fellow citizens for their assistance; and it certainly behoves this Commonwealth not to suffer the usefulness of active citizens to be lost from blameless misfortune.
Instances of liberality, as they tend to excite laudable emulation, ought to be mentioned.--In a Fire Society on Friday, near 450 dollars were subscribed for the relief of one of the brethren thereof, who had suffered by the late fire.
The citizens of this town experienced at the late fire, the indefatigable attention of the Inspector of Police, there being a plentiful supply of water from the pumps, scarce any of which were found out of order.
The water was low in the docks, which operated very disadvantageously.
