The steamer Lady of the Lake, running between Norfolk and Washington, was burned to the water's edge on Thursday evening of last week, at her wharf, at Norfolk, Va. The fire originated in the lamp room. The steamer was owned by George H. Plant & Co., of Washington, and valued at $80,000. She was to have sailed the next day for Washington, and had on board a full miscellaneous cargo, which was consigned for the most part to persons in Georgetown, Washington and Alexandria, the whole of which was destroyed by fire or seriously damaged by water.
The Washington correspondent of the Baltimore Sun says: Mr. Plant, who owns the steamer, states that he will have her rebuilt as soon as possible. In the meantime a new steamer will take its place on the line between this and Norfolk, the business of which is constantly on the increase.
The Baltimore Sun says:
On Saturday evening the steamship George Appold, of the Baltimore and Boston line, brought to this city the crew of the steamboat Lady of the Lake, which was burned at Norfolk on Thursday evening last. They were twenty in number, the majority colored men, in charge of the quartermaster, and left for Washington the same evening. They stated that the fire spread with such rapidity that all their personal effects were burned, and they saved only the clothing in which they stood.
