Full Text
Our new association for the encouragement of agriculture are of opinion, that this kingdom is not a little obliged to the British Parliament for the additional duty they have laid upon our wines, as it may be the means of turning many of our vineyards into arable lands: for we are thoroughly convinced, that the product of an acre of wheat is more valuable than that of an acre of vines, excepting those that produce the finest wines with a new duty, the English negotiators should rather have reduced the duties to next to nothing, upon condition that our government should allow the importation of British Woolen manufactures free of all duties. especially as they granted us a fishery in North America, which we had no right nor reason to expect. Had they positively insisted upon the vent of their woolen goods in this kingdom, our ministry could not have denied it ; because we were under a great necessity to make peace ; but our negotiators being certain that some people in England were in great haste to make peace, and did not conceal their strong inclination for it, there is no room to wonder that they outwitted Men who were not overstocked with wisdom.
