Full Text

Extract of a letter from Vienna.

"The Emperor having made a demand of extraordinary subsidies on account of the Turkish war to the state of Hungary, several of the Magnates answered forthwith, that they were ready to sacrifice their last drop of blood, however, on these conditions only:

1. That his Majesty should give them back the Crown of Hungary, which he carried off to, and was now kept at, the Jewel Office at Vienna.

2. That the Emperor should be crowned, and take the usual oath as King of Hungary.

3. That they should not be obliged to learn the Zigzag High-German language, but have liberty to make use of, as heretofore, the Latin in their publick business and writing.

And 4. That the odious military inscription should be totally abolished.

The Emperor was astonished, and answered thus shortly; Whether they desired only so much and no more? And why just now, at so critical a time?"
