Full Text
We believe that the entire press of the State (if there be any exception we do not remember it now,) has spoken in condemnation of the course of the Legislature in taking pay for the twenty days of the legislative recess. There is but one voice in relation to it. The custom elsewhere does not excuse it and no argument yet put forth by the members who have drawn the disputed per diem will satisfy public opinion.
The money was not earned; no service was rendered in return for it; the State has nothing to show for the ten thousand dollars thus expended; and the members who have taken the money should be made to feel that their conduct is inexcusable and that they have outraged public sentiment in this regard. It is a matter out of which no party capital can be made. The Republican members have been as derelict as the Democrats, but the good sense of the majority should have kept the Legislature from falling into such a glaring mistake.
