PEIPING, April 24. (U.P.)—Half the Japanese troops which have occupied 250 square miles of China proper were withdrawing today toward the Great Wall and Manchukuo, American dispatches from Chinwangtao said.
Chinese claimed two important victories over the invaders.
Chinese military headquarters claimed the Chinese had recaptured the towns of Chienan and Lu-Iung on the west bank of the Luan river north of Luanchow. The victories were won by troops of general Shang Chen, reinforced by 300 mutineers who deserted the independent column of General Li Chi-Chung, the Chinese said.
Li Chi-Chung was reported to be establishing headquarters at Haiving near Shanghaikwan, after disarming Chinese police of the native city of Chinwangtao.
The Chinese said they had annihilated 400 Japanese in heavy fighting at Kupeikou, where their troops were said to have repulsed repeated Japanese assaults.
Japanese claimed to have captured Kupeikou and advanced southward to Nantienmen.
