LAURENS, S. C., March 28, 1906.

THE STATE'S OPPORTUNITY.

The Greenville News says:

"If the next Democratic candidate
for President of the United States is to
come from the South, what's the mat-
ter with Governor Heyward."

The people of South Carolina should
send a delegation to the next National
Democratic Convention solid for Hey-
ward for the first place on the ticket.
Governor Heyward would command
the confidence of all parties. Republi-
cans of Massachusetts and California
would be content with him even if they
did not vote for him. Once nominated
he would be a formidable candidate.
If the Democrats of South Carolina
will unite now on Heyward for presi-
dent in 1908, the movement will take
care of itself in other States. Gov-
ernor Heyward has made friends of
friends wherever he has gone and he is
the only man in South Carolina who
could carry the State unanimously.
It would be of immeasurable benefit
to South Carolina if the State would go
before the next Democratic Convention
with an able, clean and attractive can-
didate for the presidency and support-
ing him with earnestness and enthu-
siasm, first, last and all the time.
The late William McKinley was the
most satisfactory president to all kinds
of people that the country has had
since the war. Apart from politics, Mr.
Heyward is more nearly like to Mr.
McKinley than any other public man in
the country is like to him.
It is not probable that another per-
sonality, such as is Governor Hey.
ward's can gather with accord. will
come to the front at any time again in
the near future. Through Governor
Heyward South Carolina has the op-
portunity of resuming her natural place
as a factor in national politics and the
opportunity ought not to be neglected.
The election of a South Carolina candi-
date who is of the Heyward type is in
our judgment distinctly possible.
The people of the United States
crave an honest man who is not blatant
for their chief executive.
