Rome Newspaper Learns Emissary Has Been Sent to Berlin to Gain Consent Face Food Famine.
Rome, (via Paris), June 17.--The Idea Nazionale says it has received advices from Turkey that the Turkish government has sent an emissary to Berlin to try and get the consent of Germany for Turkey to arrange a separate peace with the allies, owing to a food famine and the scarcity of munitions.
The following announcement concerning the operations at the Dardanelles was given out in London:
The situation on the Gallipoli peninsula has developed into trench warfare. After our success on the 4th instant, the Turks have evinced a great respect of our offensive and by day and night they have to submit to captures of trenches.
The situation is favorable to our forces, but is necessarily slow on account of the difficulties of the ground. The Turkish offensive has sensibly weakened.
Constantinople, (by wireless to London, June 16) June 15.--A statement issued tonight at the Turkish war office was as follows: On the Dardanelles front our artillery destroyed on Sunday, the enemy's positions for bomb throwers and machine guns opposite Ari Burnu.
