"OUR GIRLS."
HERE'S CHEEK:
The imported young man who writes locals for the Sioux City Journal has got off another joke. He says.
The suggestion to our merchants to wake up and secure better trade with the Black Hills country appears to have alarmed the St. Paul people, who say it is farther to Deadwood via Pierre than via Bismarck. The papers probably mean that it is farther from St. Paul, which is true of course. But it is not farther from Sioux City "all the same," and if the project is properly pushed Sioux City can claim the best part of the Black Hills trade, and almost entirely leave St. Paul out in the cold. And why shouldn't she!
For fear the reader may overlook it, we will state that here comes the funny part of the i. y. m.'s reflections:
It would of course be some advantage to Yankton, but the Press thinks it very smart to imagine that Yankton has some pretensions to be considered a rival of Sioux City, and to continually snarl at us, and therefore has had nothing to say in regard to the Pierre route.
As the subject now comes back to us we feel positive that the Press has occasionally had something to say about the Pierre route during the past three years. Our recollection is that for a considerable length of time our paper was almost wholly devoted to the subject. Then, too, we remember how persistently the Sioux City Journal fought against the Pierre road and labored to establish its sand hill route. But for the opposition from that quarter Pierre matters would be in vastly better shape to-day. No, we do not believe Yankton makes any pretensions toward, being considered the rival of a worn out burg like Sioux City.
