But the shot did no change the bear's unfriendly disposition towards Brock, for it caught him by the thigh, gave it a nip or two and then went for his head which he ducked down between two rocks and thus preserved his scalp. The bear apparently became disgusted at this maneuver, and retreated. Brock reloaded his gun and fired a second shot, but with what effect he does not know, as he was too lame to follow the animal's trail. He considers himself lucky in getting off as well as he did.
