Save Those Teeth

(From Georgia's Health)

The loss of permanent teeth in children and young adults is unnecessary, Dental Associations assert. It is estimated that 40 per cent of children have had at least one permanent tooth extracted by the age of 14 and that by the age of 35, one-quarter to one-half of the population has or should have artificial dentures.

Four basic steps can ensure a better start along the road to life-long dental health for the nation's children.

1. A balanced diet low in sweets.

2. Proper toothbrushing after eating, starting at age three.

3. Early and regular treatment to control and prevent dental disorders.

4. Fluoridation of community water supplies or application of a fluoride solution to children's teeth to prevent dental decay.
