GOOD ATTENDANCE AT LEGION MEET HELD LAST NIGHT

Juneau Post No. 4, The American Legion, met Monday evening at 8 o'clock in the Legion Dugout and the increased attendance indicated a rising interest in the activities of the organization, according to Post Commander Chester Zenger, who presided.

Routine business was transacted, with several special committee reports being given, and Adjutant John Parmenter reported the post finances in sound condition for immediate needs.

Among other matters of business transacted was the appropriation of $50 contributed to the present campaign of The Boy Scouts of America. Legionnaire, and Scout Director for Alaska Powers, was present and answered questions as to the progress of the campaign and effective methods of carrying on this worthwhile youth movement.

Active Scout Troop sponsorship and cooperation are more important, he said, than finances, although both are vital.

Ray Beach, Post Chaplain, made a report of a meeting at Anchorage last week, attended by the Department Executive Committee, Alaska's Legion Commander Nordling, First Vice Commander Showalter of Adak, and others. Child welfare was considered as one of the primary obligations, said Chaplain Beach. Waino Hendrickson, Post Chairman of the child welfare committee, reported that his committee has active cases under advisement at present, with action to be reported soon.

David Andrus reported on a vacation journey through the Pacific Coast and Western states, including a trip to the Grand Canyon of Arizona, Bryce Canyon and Zion's National Monument in Utah. He said, however, that he was glad to get back home.

A visiting Legionnaire was Truman Cook of the Ketchikan Post who is taking a leave of absence from his duties at the Sentinel Island lighthouse. Amos J. Alten, formerly a neighbor of the famous author, George Ade of Indianapolis, was received into membership, and indications pointed to a record year in preparation for the Department of Alaska convention next summer to be held at the Mt. McKinley National Park.

Commander Zenger reported on a conference with the officials of the public schools relative to the awarding of honor medals to one or more members of the student body. Plans are shaping up for Armistice Day observance.

The next meeting was announced for Monday evening, October 25, in the Dugout.
