Extract of a letter from a gentleman in France, to his friend in New-Haven, dated Abbeville, Jan. 10, 1786:

"A certain Antoine Cassoni, a rich merchant of Cadiz, had destined one of his two sons to the commercial life. The youth accordingly embarked in the Los Amigos for the Indies. The wind was favourable, and seemed to promise a favourable voyage; but fortune was against them: a storm arose; their efforts to brave it were in vain; they were driven into the Straits of Gibraltar; the vessel was wrecked on the rocks, and the crew perished. The unhappy father had the coasts searched thoroughly, during eight months, but could hear no tidings of his son, and at length concluded that he was lost; when, on the 26th of October last, while Cassoni was busied without, the son entered suddenly, and flew to his mother's bosom, who was nearly distracted with joy. At that moment the father (whose fault was that of jealousy) entered, and seeing a young man in the arms of his wife, and not recollecting the features of his son, instantly drew a poniard, and plunged it into his breast. The son with difficulty related his miraculous escape, and expired in the arms of his wretched father, who would have plunged into his own breast the dagger which was covered with the blood of his son, had he not been restrained by those whom the tragical scene had drawn together. The man was apprehended, and is to take a trial; but it is to be hoped, by all who know the circumstances, that justice will forbear its right, as no punishment can exceed that of the remorse of his conscience."
