At the hour for opening the polls at Stanford precinct No. 1, not an officer appointed to hold the election could be found. An hour passed and still they came not. Then the County Judge, the Clerk and various and sundry lawyers began to lay their heads together to consider what should be done. The laws bearing on the subject were read and discussed. If only one of the appointed officers would come, all would be right, and finally when it had been decided to send for one, Mr. James L. Lackey put in his appearance, and gave as a reason for his delay that he thought nine o'clock was the proper hour to begin. He then appointed the other officers and the work began, not, however, until a great deal of dissatisfaction had been expressed. All day long the town was black with negroes, and it was wonderful to see the unanimity with which they voted for Adams for Commonwealth's Attorney, and Caldwell for Sheriff, although neither had been put out by his party. A great many so-called Democrats staid at home, and the result was that Mr. R. C. Warren received but 96 majority in Stanford where he should have had at least 300. It is passing strange how men, with any desire whatever for the success of the Democratic party, can fail to vote on every occasion, and especially on this occasion, when a competent, sober and worthy citizen was opposed by such a man as the Republicans voted for. We give the official vote of the county in the table below:

From all the reports that we can get, it is safe to say that Warren has been elected Commonwealth's Attorney by about 100 or 125 majority. Our reports of the majorities in the counties are as follows: For Warren—Lincoln, 267; Casey, 114; Boyle, 66, and Wayne, 150. For Adams—Pulaski, 285; Garrard, 94; Rockcastle, 12, and Russell, 59. But as Russell is Democratic, it is more than probable that our report from that county is incorrect.
