When Corte (the capital of Corsica) was taken by the French, Paoli directly quitted the town on foot, having previously sent away his baggage; and, with two or three chosen friends, proceeded, on foot, to the shore, and there embarked for the island of Sardinia.

A French corporal and two grenadiers of the regiment of Champagne having attacked some of the Corsicans, one of the grenadiers being killed, & the others dangerously wounded, the corporal came off safe, after having killed eleven of the natives with his bayonet; on which he was invited to dine with the Count de Vaux who promised to provide for him.
