War Department Clarifies Stand On Negro Policy

WASHINGTON—(NNPA)—The War Department on Saturday night issued the following memorandum for the press: "The War Department has received numerous queries concerning its policy of transporting Negro personnel. The War Department policy in this respect is well known. Personnel traveling aboard ships under Army control are separated by units. But there is no discrimination because of race or color. This has been the rule prior to and during the war and will continue to be the rule as to transporting Army Negro personnel on vessels under Navy control.

The Navy Department has recently issued a directive to all its personnel ordering that there be no discrimination because of color or race."
