Editor, The Press:

Your efforts to defend our liberties and to deflate our hypocrisies are both interesting and wholesome. I think you are performing a real service.

However, I have been looking for an outburst against the national attempt to saddle us with peacetime conscription and to hand over to the Pentagon control of what little freedom we still maintain locally. Since the News and the Journal fail to give fair coverage on this vital issue, I have been hoping that The Press would come along to present the negative side which the other papers fail to give.

Why is it that many people who fight centralization of control at Washington, lie down without a whisper, when U.M.T. is pushed in congress? What a windfall for the military and the politicians if that passed! Why allow the top brass to push this through under the guise of an emergency when the selective service law takes all the eligibles now? Why foist it on the country by subterfuge and political trickery? What a field for your editorial pen!

My experience has shown throughout the years that as people know the truth about U.M.T. that they turn against it. You can do your readers a great favor and your nation a great service by informing your readers about the threat of this un-American, foreign, imported, outmoded system of goose-stepping a nation in peacetime. By giving them these facts at once while citizens still have time to write their opposition to their congressmen, you will be doing real public service.

I am not trying to run your business, but you have invited comment and suggestion.
