Full Text

The recent heavy fall of rain has caused great floods in the James, Potomac, Rivanna and Susquehanna rivers and Chesapeake and Ohio canals. News by telegraph and mail, gives a full and graphic account of the loss of life and property occasioned by the freshets.

At Lynchburg the loss by the rising of the James river is estimated at $100,000. The Grange and Alexandria and the Southside Railroads each suffer to the extent of half a million. Manufactories, residences and other buildings along the rivers were swept away and carried down the flood. Several persons in the vicinity of Richmond were drowned, and the lower portion of the city is surrounded with water. At Washington and Georgetown the Potomac overflowed its banks and swept away a portion of the Long Bridge.

Reports concerning the result on the line of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal are meagre, but sufficient to show great damage has been done. At Harper's Ferry it is said that over forty lives have been lost by drowning. The canal and railroads have been washed to a considerable extent.
