The Teachers' Institute of Randolph county held its third session of the season at the neighboring city of Paris. Several teachers from other counties were present. The local ministers were unusually interested in the educational efforts. Revs. Guy and White entered into the discussions and frequently gave expression to valuable suggestions.
Prof. Harrison, principal of the Paris school and president of the Missouri State Teachers' Association, is perhaps better acquainted with Institute work than any other teacher in our state. Miss Mildred Allen and Mr. Tutt and his assistants are doing a splendid work in that city.
The morning session of the Institute convened at 9:45. J. H. Smith, presiding.
Several papers were read and discussed. The paper on literature gave rise to much warm feeling, especially that part which pertained to the literary efforts of the race. Some one lamentingly asserted that, as yet, the race had produced no book which might justly claim a place among the classics. A few biased opinions were expressed. The afternoon session was the last of the day. The most of the time was devoted to methods of teaching grammar and geography. At the suggestion of Miss Cornie Cross, of Macon, Mo., a very useful geographical exercise was illustrated to the Institute. The evening session was held in the Baptist church. At 7:30 a large audience had assembled. The teacher's relation to his parents and to his profession were interesting subjects of the evening.
Rev. Guy opened the discussion.
After the labors of the day the teachers and friends were entertained at a banquet by the local teachers.
The next session of the Institute will be in Moberly.
