An officer who came over in the packet, and was in the engagement with the French fleet, says, that he is sorry to see so many reflections in some of the publick prints cast on Admiral Byron, and adds, that he was not to blame, but his division was becalmed, and could not get up to the assistance of Admiral Barrington; a circumstance, he says, that often happens in those seas, as there may be wind in one part, and still a league off none; he further says, that the French fleet suffered as much as ours, and that Count D'Estaing's ship was on fire three times; he confirms the account of Grenada being taken; he also says, that Captain Finchaw, who commanded the Monmouth, was killed in the engagement between the two fleets.
