The Manufacture of Sugar.—The question of making sugar from the beet, Sorghum and corn-stalks, is now attracting sober attention. Recent discoveries in the art of expressing the juice and evaporating the syrup so as to produce a fine article of granulated sugar, at low cost, have produced important results. The successful experiments of the Agricultural Department of the government, and the profitable working of sugar mills in Illinois, Michigan, New York and elsewhere, have fully demonstrated the practicability of making instead of importing the millions of pounds of sugar we now consume. It is said that the soil and climate of Maryland, particularly of Harford County, is well adapted to the culture of these sugar producing staples. Our canned corn and tomatoes are taking the lead in the markets of the world. We now have some fifty canning establishments in our county, and their number is yearly increasing. We doubt not but in a few years the manufacture of sugar will be also one of our most important industries.
