Prediction Comes True
The recent debacle of Mussolini's Italian forces in Lybia recalls a prediction made by The Advertiser in an editorial written on June 13, 1940, when the Duce thought he had caught England down and wanted to grab off some glory by "stabbing his neighbors in the back." We thought at that time and still do, that a country as easily duped by a mouthing braggart would put up no battle of any consequences. There is quite a difference between fanaticism and patriotism. A soldier fights as much with the feeling in his heart as he does with the equipments of war.
Recalling the paragraph of our editorial when Italy entered the war on the side of the Nazis, we predicted:
"If the Fascist fanatics put up no better battles than they did in Ethiopia then they can be run into the Mediterranean sea with a bunch of firecrackers."
Recent weeks seem to prove this prediction beyond any doubt. Just as soon as the Fascist armies were faced with battle, it became a contest of how fast they could run. The commanding officers proved to be the best runners, and how some of them covered hundreds of miles in the short time seems to be the only military secret they possessed.
Mussolini's regime will go down in history as the lowest form of treachery ever assembled by a nation.
