THE SABBATH SCHOOL.
Adult Classes.

What a delightful spectacle it would present both to angels and men, to see a whole congregation, as with one mind, sit down in the Sabbath School to the study of the word of God. But such has as yet perhaps nowhere been witnessed. Many will turn away with a manifest indifference, if not contempt from this simple, but extraordinary means of acquiring a more thorough knowledge of divine truth. Great advantage might arise from the formation of adult classes for the mutual study of the Bible. But how often do many christians it may be even—pass the interim of religious service in talking over the passing events of the day, or in laying worldly plans for the prosecution of the week. How much more appropriate to the solemnities and objects of the day and occasion to be acquiring religious knowledge, and a better understanding of that truth, which is able to make wise unto salvation. But there are those, who, if they do not say it, at least feel that they are too old to become scholars. Do they mean that they are so old as to have become too wise to learn of God from his word? Too old to study those truths, worthy of a revelation from Heaven? Truths so transcendent in their character, and momentous in interest, that the very angels of God desire to look into them! The most interesting and worthy employment of human life is the investigation of truth. Knowledge is the appropriate food of the soul, for which it pants with insatiable desire. The mysterious facts connected with human redemption afford scope for the most profound research, and protracted study.

It is one of the most interesting views of a future state, to contemplate the soul progressing perpetually in the knowledge of God and of truth. This fills the devout and enlightened christian with inexpressible joy. The ingenuous theologian anticipates with rapture the time when laying aside his books on divinity, and dismissing his imperfect earthly teachers, he shall consult the oracles of sacred truth as they come all interpreted from the lips of him in whom is the fountain of all wisdom, and knowledge, and learning. The last great meeting of the Sabbath school will be in Heaven. To hold one protracted joyful jubilee! There the broad horizon of truth will be continually clearing up, and superintendent, teacher, parent and scholar will together contemplate the attributes of Deity, the wonders of Redemption, and the boundless love of God to man!
