IN CALLAHAN SHOOTING
Sheriff's Posse Captures Three Men-
Bloodhounds Lead Officers to
Govan Smith's Home.
JACKSON,
Ky.,
June 9.-Govan
Smith, head of the Smith feudists, his
brother, Elisha Smith, and Levi Johnson
have been captured by a sheriff's
posse and held on a charge of com-
plicity in the attempted assassination
of former Sheriff Ed
Callahan, the
feudist.
Bloodhounds on the supposed trail
of the would-be assassins led the sheriff's
posse to the home of Govan Smith,
where the occupants, fearful of their
lives, admitted that the three men
came there nearly exhausted and had
been furnished with horses to con-
tinue their flight over the mountains
to Buckhorn college, a missionary in-
stitution. The posse at once took up the
pursuit, and, overtaking two of the
fugitives at Squabble Creek, arrested
Elisha Smith and Levi Johnson before
they could draw their weapons. Govan
Smith was captured later on Long's
creek.
The officers are now looking for As-
bury Spicer, former participant in the
Marcum
assassination, and John
Smith, who eloped with a former wife
of Ed Callahan.
The condition of Callahan is such
that the attending surgeons declare
that there is no hope for him, although
as a last resort he may be taken to
the hospital at Lexington.
