When the Rev. E. A. Edwards left Lawrence recently to become the rector of the Episcopal Church work at the University of Oklahoma, we were sorry to lose him, for he is that proverbially rare type of person, a real friend.
Naturally a man of broad human sympathies, his education and training have done their part to make his character what it is. Deciding on medicine as a profession, he studied and took his degree in due time, and served as superintendent of a hospital in the East. But as he worked, the conviction grew on him that he must not only be a healer of bodies but a healer of souls as well. Accordingly, after a seminary course in his native State, Virginia, he entered the ministry of the church.
During the World War he was an Army chaplain, and with characteristic devotion and unselfishness, underwent every privation and tasted every agony to which his boys were exposed. His book, "From Doniphan to Verdun," gives a revealing reason for the friendship which began between him and them during the war and endures to this day.
Dr. Edwards, since coming to Lawrence sixteen years ago, has identified himself with every worth-while enterprise here at Haskell. He has been a true spiritual father to the students which comprise his special group; he has taken keen delight in addressing our chapel assemblies, and of late years, as chairman of the Ministerial Union, he has used his influence in shaping such policies as would result in the highest good for Haskell.
His happy outlook on life, his enthusiasm, his love of wholesome fun are contagious. We shall not soon forget the customary preface in a merry vein, to his serious talks-- the preface which always put us in the right humor to hear his message: "Now, if that nice looking girl right there, and the lazy boy in the second row who always goes to sleep whenever I talk, will kindly pay attention
We miss Dr. Edwards from our midst, but we are proud in the thought that wherever he goes, there goes a friend of Haskell boys and girls.
