WANMDI, THE BALD EAGLE, GOES BY.
BY EL COMANCHO.

"Hoh-hee! There is that one who hunts among the clouds and takes what he wants when he wants it from the flocks of the Flying People as they go by. He is the one my people call Wanmdi and the white man's name for him is Bald Eagle."

Little Owl, the old Indian chief, pointed upward as he spoke toward a black shape which wheeled against the white background of the high clouds like a small airplane. Far above the earth the big bird wheeled and circled with extended wings as he looked the lower ground over for something which would do for meat for his hungry maw.

"What does he circle way up there so high when he has to come down when he catches anything to eat?" little Tommy wanted to know. Betty Jane came and stood beside the old chief with Dorothy. while Bobbie and Phyllis found blocks of wood to sit on while they watched the eagle.

"I think," said Little Owl, replying to Tommy's question, "that the eagle, and all such killer-birds, too, hunt high for several reasons. If he is up high he can see over a great deal of the ground under him and this gives him more chance to find his prey.

"Also, when he sees it he can drop very swiftly down while if he had to fly upward, a bird higher up could fly away faster than the eagle could rise up. Another reason is that anything high in the air is hard to see from the ground as you can see by watching airplanes. you know they go out of sight into the upper air sometimes while you can still hear the roar of their engines; so it is likely that the eagle uses distance to conceal himself and depends on a swift rush down out of the blue sky to bring him within striking distance of another flying bird before the other bird knows that any danger is near. This gives the eagle the advantage of surprise.

"You see, there are several perfectly good reasons why the eagle should go high for his hunting-when one stops to study it a bit. and then reason it out there seems to be nothing at all wrong with the eagle's hunting.

"That is so with all things in nature, sometimes you may not be able to see or understand just why a thing is as it is but if you study it for a while you will find that nature always has a reason for everything and that it always fits the case so well that you will have to acknowledge that you could not improve it even if you tried your best."

Suddenly the big eagle folded his wings and shot down out of the sky straight toward a flock of ducks flying out over the lake and within a few seconds he had plunged in among them struck and made his kill, then, with beating wings, he carried his prey to the top of an old pine and feasted. It is the way of the wilderness.

Key Lines

"Hoh Hee! There Is That One Who Hunts Among The Clouds And Takes What He Wants When He Wants It From The Flocks Of The Flying People As They Go By. He Is The One My People Call Wanmdi And The White Man's Name For Him Is Bald Eagle." "That Is So With All Things In Nature, Sometimes You May Not Be Able To See Or Understand Just Why A Thing Is As It Is But If You Study It For A While You Will Find That Nature Always Has A Reason For Everything And That It Always Fits The Case So Well That You Will Have To Acknowledge That You Could Not Improve It Even If You Tried Your Best." Suddenly The Big Eagle Folded His Wings And Shot Down Out Of The Sky Straight Toward A Flock Of Ducks Flying Out Over The Lake And Within A Few Seconds He Had Plunged In Among Them Struck And Made His Kill, Then, With Beating Wings, He Carried His Prey To The Top Of An Old Pine And Feasted. It Is The Way Of The Wilderness.
