Two little heroes came to the front recently at the Columbia river. The particulars are as follows: A small schooner named the Alpha left Baker's Bay on November 12th and returned the same day, the Captain being sick. He sent a boy of 12 aboard to act as Captain, who with another little fellow of 8 years named Gable Gableson, got the craft under way. They sailed on the 24th, and in attempting to reach Tillamook next day, got in the breakers and both were washed overboard. The older succeeded in getting on board again and then saved his companion and got the craft clear and went to sea, where they remained for eleven days short of provisions and for that three days had nothing whatever to eat. They finally made the bar again and succeeded in crossing safely, and on arriving at Astoria they were taken ashore and kindly cared for. The little fellows were badly bruised and covered with boils.
