In the due course of time they returned to the floating stage from which they departed, but this time the tide was out, and the muddy bottom alongside the boat was as smooth as a new mirror. Two of the young ladies sprang out upon the float with buoyant step, but as the third graceful damsel stepped on to the edge of the boat, she concluded to jump upon the real terra firma, and struck out for the deceiving bottom of the harbor. Her feet struck the yielding substance, and down she went, like a duck's foot, in the mud, until half her body was buried in coastwise blacking of no very savory smell. She was assisted out by two young men, after hard pulling, and taken to a house near by, where her frills were dried as well as they could be, and then left for home on the evening train.—New Haven Courier.
