Night Watchman Is Recovering

FRESNO, Cal., Jan. 5.—Condition of Ira Benham, 50, night watchman, was reported slightly improved at a local sanitarium today several hours after he had fallen three stories to the bottom of an elevator shaft in a downtown department store where he was employed.

The accident occurred when Benham ran the elevator to the top of the shaft and opened the door to remove a chair. The chair toppled over backward, plunging Benham through the shaft. He sustained a crushed chest, a compound fracture of the left ankle and possible internal injuries.
