Independence Day Is Observed in the Proper Spirit.
VERY FINE PICNIC DINNER
The Black Eagle Club Defeats the Belt Boys at Baseball—In General this Day Passes Off Quietly.
Great Falls, July 5.—To-day's celebration in Great Falls has been a comparatively quiet one, in fact more so than for some years in the past. The principal attractions were at the Black Eagle dam and the Boston and Montana addition. In the down town districts the small boy and the firecracker had the right of way. During the afternoon all the stores were closed and public offices and institutions remained closed all day. A few visitors were in from the surrounding towns, but a large majority remained at home to witness the local celebration which occurred in almost all the camps.
The residents of the B. & M. addition opened the programme of the day with a trolley car parade at 8:30 o'clock. At 9:30 exercises were begun in the B. & M. school house. The building was comfortably filled. Hon. Ransome Cooper, president, introduced the orator of the day, Clarence Boardman, who delivered an appropriate address. The Declaration of Independence was read by Frank Depew. During the exercises music was furnished by a band under the leadership of John A. Brown. Shortly before noon the programme was completed and the audience dismissed by a prayer by E. H. Elliott. An elaborate picnic dinner was then served under the management of Mrs. Frank Boardman and was most liberally patronized. At the Black Eagle park a good crowd assembled to hear an elegant musical programme rendered by the Black Eagle band.
The game of ball between the Black Eagle club of Great Falls and a team from Belt was called. The game resulted in a victory for the home team by a score of 28 to 14.
At 1:30 the programme of sports was begun and attracted a great crowd. When a portion of this programme was completed rain began to fall and the remainder were abandoned. The contestants were local men.
