About the same Time, two Canoes of Indians were hunting Moose in the Night, as is usual at this Season of the Year: and being in Pursuit of one, which was swimming at a small Distance from the headmost Canoe, an Indian in the other, taking that Canoe to be the Moose, fired and killed one of his Companions, whose Name was Loron, the likeliest Indian in the Penobscot Tribe. As soon as he was dead, the other Indians cut off one of his Hands, salted and smoaked it, in order to preserve it, to carry to their Priest in Canada, according to their Custom, in accidental Death.
