Dashing's Diary

10 o'clock.-Oh, morality. mortality!-if we are mortal, we ought to be moral; for every breach of morality convinces us of our mortality-Drunk-Egad. go to bed drunk—you wake, and doze, and dream; then rise to feel all the pleasantries of a most infernal heart ache dizziness--conscious of having acted like a fool. You summon the witnesses of your folly. What do you find ? Purse empty, new beaver metamorphosed into sailor's hat, sundry bumps and contusions, red eyes. (Enter John.) Eh! what's that-a letter, and from Emily? Ah! she has heard of it. Yet, no. See, it begins, "My dear Frederick." Just hear the conclusion—“ Can you doubt my confidence in you. I have confided in you as in a brother, and have told you all I know. Yet you will persist in doubting the sincerity of my friendship. and cruelly-no, not cruelly— refuse to believe Your attached friend. Emily. (Enter Tomlinson. speaking.) "Ah! good morning. damn me-reading love letters I suppose; parmittes mei; Who is the charming creature? Why, man, what now I secrets from your friend! Pon honor, I wont spoil the game. But you look down, I think. What's in the wind now ? Are you going to turn Methodist 1" "How so, when I got drunk only last night ?" "Well, then, there's some hopes of you left. Will you walk ?,' "You must excuse me." "Ride?' "Non ridendum." "Well. you do look miserable enough I must confess. I am going to see Emily. Shall I tell her how sober you look, and"- "My dear fellow, don't mention me to her." "And why not? She'll be sure to mention you if I don't, and every body says it is to be a match; but as you say. Good morning, aurevoir." (Dashing muses.)-"Me a husband! Well, Its strange too. What qualities I possess or it? A Puppy. yet despising dandies; drunkard-lazy-No. I'll be hanged first.-I can do any thing but make Emily wretched. I'll reform, or renounce her."
