ASHEVILLE, N. C. (UP)
Bill Umsteader of Abbeville, S. C., defeated Whit Cobb of Durham, N. C., for the men's singles crown in the 31st annual North Carolina Open tennis tourney which ended here yesterday.
Umsteader opened up on Cobb for what looked like a quick easy victory, but the Durham star got tough in the late stages and Umsteader had to rally at the end to win 6-2, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.
Ed Hudgins of Greensboro, N.C., beat Ed White, Coral Gables, Fla. 6-4, 3-6 and 6-3, to win the junior singles championship, and Umsteader teamed with Bob Green, Palm Beach, Fla., to win the men's doubles crown from Cobb and Bob Fairey, Durham, N. C., 10-6, 6-2, 1-6 and 6-3.
Evelyn Gowan and Louise Fowler both of Covington, Ga., won the women's doubles by defeating Audrey Brown, Southern Pines, N. C., and Joan Ramey, Oak Ridge, Tenn., 6-3 and 6-3. In the mixed doubles, Hudgins and Miss Brown won over Green and Miss Ramey, 6-4 and 6-2.
Miss Gowan copped honors in the women's singles competition by defeating Miss Brown.
