Full Text

Senator William V. Sullivan, of Mississippi, who was served last week with papers in the suit filed against him by Miss Lucy Leeton for breach of promise to marry, has placed himself again under the ban of that young lady's displeasure by slapping her face on the street Saturday night. Miss Leeton declares she will avenge herself by having the Senator arrested today for assault. In her version of the affair she says she was called out of a restaurant near the Baltimore and Ohio by an employe of Senator Sullivan, who said he wanted to give her a registered letter. When she reached the hall, Mr. Sullivan stepped into view. He told her to take his arm, as he wanted to talk to her privately. He then asked her to walk to the corner of the street with him. During this time she says he upbraided her for her suit against him. When they arrived in front of the railroad station he became so exasperated when she told him to go home to his wife that he slapped her face with his open hand four times. Miss Leeton's cause was soon championed by a gathering crowd, and the Senator took a passing street car. Mr. Sullivan says he did slap the young woman in a fit of sudden anger, on account of her importunities for money and her abuse when he refused it. Miss Leeton applied for a warrant for Senator Sullivan's arrest this morning, but Prosecuting Attorney Maloney declined to issue one until he should have opportunity to obtain affidavits from witnesses of the assault. He issued subpoenas for those whose names were given him by Miss Leeton and will question them this afternoon.
