What A Volcano Can Do.

Cotopaxi, in 1533, threw its fiery rockets 500 feet above its crater.

While in 1701, the blazing mass seeking an outlet, roared so that its awful voice was heard at a distance of more than 600 miles.

In 1797 the crater of Tunguragua, one of the great peaks of the Andes, [threw] torrents of mud, which dammed up the rivers, covered new lakes, and in various ways [made deposits] 1000 feet wide [and] 600 feet deep.

The streams from Vesuvius, which in 1879 ran [through] Portici [and] del Greco, continued since [then], [carrying] salt matter, and in 1872 when Torre del Greco was destroyed a second time, [a] mass of lava amounting to 500,000 cubic feet.

In 1769 Tonga poured forth a flood which covered 81 square miles of surface and attained [a depth of] only 300 feet. On this occasion the sand and [surf] [formed a] cone in the Monte Rossini near Honolulu, [a] cone of two miles in circumference and 40 feet high.

A crater thrown out by Etna in 1699 [continued to] [emit] [rockets and ash] for nine months [after the] water [from the] eruption. [It is] on record that the hot [lava] of this same mountain after the eruption was not thoroughly consolidated for ten years after the event.

In the eruption of Novarupta A.D. [1912], [it vomited] tons [of lava] and ashes far exceeding the entire bulk of the mountain, while in the [Katmai] [eruption] [ash fell] [in] Constantinople, Syria and Egypt, [hailstones eight pounds in weight fell] in Sicily to Palermo, a distance of [800] miles. [With these] masses were tossed up 2000 feet above the summit.

Cotopaxi has projected a block of lava enormous in volume at a distance of nine miles, and sometimes during the most terrible eruption on record sent its ashes to Batavia, Java, a distance of three hundred miles.
