THE CITY LIBRARY.

There is in this city a valuable institution, though yet in its infancy, not properly cherished by our citizens, perhaps not even known to some, to which we are anxious to invite their attention—we mean the Washington Library. This establishment was commenced two or three years ago, by a few friends of literature, and shortly after was incorporated by an act of Congress. From the period of its foundation, the institution has not received that support which its importance merited, and which a liberal and enlightened community ought to have bestowed. Notwithstanding the discouragement of neglect, and even the frowns of some, we are happy to find, that by the persevering labors of a few friends, it has grown to a magnitude that reflects honor upon its patrons, and promises to be a public and permanent good. The Library contains at this time above nine hundred volumes of the best selected books, in the various departments of literature; and thus rich store of amusement and instruction now offers its benefits to all who are willing to contribute a trifle to its support and enlargement. Knowledge is the life of liberty, and it is the duty of every citizen of this free and favored land, to promote, for his own as well as the general advantage, as far as he can, the diffusion of useful knowledge. We hope, therefore, that the Washington Library will no longer languish for the want of due encouragement: It deserves the fostering regard of all who value literature, either as a public benefit, or as a source of private gratification.
