Porterism—Curious Exposition.—We publish this morning, from the Harrisburg Reporter, an exposition relative to the miserable tricks of Governor Porter and his satellites in the matter of the passage of the celebrated Relief Law, which deserves the earnest attention of every citizen of Pennsylvania. "Bad as Porterism is generally considered, it will be found from this statement to be worse than is supposed. The trickery, treachery, and juggling thus laid bare, are more like the feats of rogues in a Spanish farce, than like anything else that has come to our knowledge connected with politics in this country. State papers full of sounding professions to deceive the people, are put forth, while at the same moment every engine is put in motion, to accomplish contrary results. Delegations are drawn from their post of duty to confer with the Executive, that obnoxious laws may be passed in their absence—clocks are put forward and back, to deceive for the same purpose, and nothing is thought too mean or too vile which may aid in the grand work of betraying the community. Alas for Pennsylvania, when such things can be told of her public officers almost without even an attempt at contradiction! Within this commonwealth it may truly be said that corruption has done its masterpiece"—Pennsylvanian.
