MR. PRINTER,

A letter fell into my hands a day or two ago, from which the following is extracted; if you think publishing it in your patriotic paper will answer any good purpose, please insert it, and oblige

A FIRM PATRIOT.

Extract of a letter from Mr. —, dated at New-York, December 9, 1786, to Major S—, Nova-Scotia:

AMONG other things, I have to inform you that the legislature of this province (now dissolved) will meet early next month. Our old friend S. I—, is a representative, and it is expected, by some, that he will have very great influence next session in repealing a number of the pernicious laws, now in force, against loyalists, &c: I had a conversation with him, a few weeks since, on the subject of granting Congress their impost; and by what I can find, he is entirely averse to the measure; nay he even went so far as to say, that he was determined to oppose it let the consequences be what they would. No doubt but he has our interest in view, and foresees, that unless Congress can get the states to accede to their plan, anarchy and confusion must inevitably ensue: this is what our friend is aiming at. He shewed me several bills which he intends to bring forward next session, and I think they will all pass, for the country members are so prepossessed in his favor, and think him such a sensible, honest man, that two thirds I am confident will vote for his measures. Pray keep this a secret, for if some of our high whigs here were to see this letter, they would immediately begin to suspect me, and then perhaps I should suffer severely. for all know that I am a firm friend to Great-Britain, notwithstanding I wear the mask of whiggism, and practice at the bar, where I am commonly known by the name of double faced TOM.

This republican government cannot hold long, for the exertions of our friends, in this place, have been crowned with remarkable success. The cunning of D. M— joined with the persuasive arguments of Jimmy it—, and aided still more by our good friend T. B—, have induced a great number of the moderate whigs to turn about and profess for our noble sovereign. Depend upon it Major, that if we can do as much for Great-Britain as we have for three years past, seven eights of the inhabitants of this place will be willing to throw aside their republican government, and swear allegiance to the best of monarchs. Let me know, in your next, how you like Nova-Scotia, and what progress our friend has made in his new scheme. Do not forget to send, by return of the schooner, the latest papers that came from London; also the certificate which Dr. O—. left for me. I am heartily sick of living in this cursed country, among a parcel of rebels; but have sanguine hopes, that a few months will reverse the scene, and our friends once more rule this depraved land. Let me know, if you please, where B. Arnold, Esq. is, and how he makes out. If in Nova-Scotia, pray tell him from me, that a short time will put it in his power to revisit this country in peace, when it will be under the controul of the British heroes.
