The New York Packet

Extract of a letter received by a gentleman in Charleston, from his correspondent in London dated April 19.

"I hope that natural affection, which every good man has for his country, will induce you as far as prudence can dictate, to endeavour to conciliate old friends, though in different Empires. I own myself a citizen of the world, and embrace with pleasure, every well disposed person; regardless of his country or religion. The heart is all I look to. If that be right, if it beats in unison with humanity, I shall ever be happy to embrace its owner. I think I see you laugh, -be it so-t-mirth is what I never object to. even though it should sometimes be caused by my own imbecility.

"As Foote said, 'this curious busy town, by way of news,' talks of nothing but the commercial treaty with our old antagonists the French, and the consequent examination of witnesses. and future trial of the able tyrant Hastings: Hitherto both parties in the House of Commons, have acquitted themselves with great honor and impartiality. Mr. Sheridan. in the longest and most admired speech that ever was uttered, placed Mr Hastings crimes in such various points of view, that he justly received the encomiums of Mr. Pitt, and of every person in the House. It is said to have at last equalled, if not excelled the most eloquent orators in Greece or Rome ; and when we consider what excellent motives influence the exertion of this able senator. for the protection of innocence and suppression of tyranny—we must confess that the cause or action greatly adds to its merit.

"In your next which I desire may not be delayed, I will expect some American politics. Our papers represent your States in a state of anarchy. Surely, after having acquired a victory over us, their good sense should point out the propriety, nay, the necessity of unity among themselves, lest their new friends (which is much to be apprehended) take advantage of their civil dissensions."
