The Cossacks who constantly attend the Russian armies, and who are the more attached to Suwarrow, as from experience they have the strongest confidence in his success, are amongst the fiercest people on the globe. They consist of hardy tribes of Tartars, whose custom is to rush in upon a broken enemy, and who have no conception of any thing like quarter. They are extremely well mounted on strong and swift horses, bearing lances couched as in days of ancient chivalry. and drive with such impetuosity as with ease to lift a Frenchman from his horse.
