MONTREAL, Sept. 30.

On the 22d inst. as the steam-boat Cornwall was coming to at the Carillion landing place, one of the crew observed a large bear swimming across the river. Capt. Scott immediately manned the boat of the Cornwall and gave him chase, and, upon coming up with him, shot twice, wounding him each time in the head, but not mortally.

They then determined to attack him with their oars, in which they were assisted by gentleman in a canoe; but master Bruin not liking the unexpected interference, laid hold of the canoe with his paws and upset it, plunging one of his antagonists into deep water: when the attention of the boat's crew was now for a short time called to the preservation of their assistant, whom they succeeded in rescuing from danger, and then proceeded to renew their attack; but the victory was not so easily gained as had been at first expected, the buoyancy of the bear's body preventing the blow from taking full effect; and it was only after a contest of nearly an hour that they succeeded in killing him, and bringing him safely ashore.
