Full Text

Extract of a letter, from a Gentleman of character, to his friend in this city, dated Head Quarters at Cambridge, May 11, 1775.

"The troops here are employed in fortifying this camp, training the soldiery, preparing artillery, stores, &c. General Gage is fortifying every eminence in the town of Boston, and securing himself as well as he can against any attack from the country; their works are so large, and so many, and their people so few, especially as they allow themselves reduced by the affair of the 19th ult. near 1000 men, dead, wounded, prisoners, and otherwise disabled by fatigues, &c. &c. the remainder are so harassed by continual watchings, that they do not sleep more than one night in seven, and now are confined to salt provisions; by all which, no doubt, they will soon be reduced, by fatigue and sickness, to intolerable distress."
