COUNTY BODY TAKES ACTION

Matters of Local and State Interest Before Chamber of Commerce Here Tuesday Night.

ADDS TO THE MEMBERSHIP

The first regular business meeting, following its recent organization, was held by the Atlantic County Chamber of Commerce in the City Hall last Tuesday evening.

With President Lewis B. Mathias presiding, there was a fine attendance representing Atlantic City, Pleasantville, Absecon, Linwood, Somers Point and Egg Harbor City, as well as the Atlantic County Board of Agriculture, which has only recently joined the new county organization. The delegates in attendance represented about two thousand members of the municipal bodies.

The Chamber started into action by taking up several important local, county and state matters. It endorsed a resolution to the Inter-State Commerce Commission opposing the merging of the ownership of the Reading Railroad and its subsidiary lines with the New York Central Railroad. This is a matter of deep interest to Atlantic County and South Jersey in general, and many organizations are already on record as opposing the merger.

Another matter of state wide interest was the endorsement of a resolution to support the movement for legislation at the coming session of the state legislature for an appropriation of $50,000, to properly advertise the resources of New Jersey, along industrial, agricultural and recreational lines to the people of the United States. The object being to attract home seekers to New Jersey, and showing its natural and commercial advantages in their true light.

The Chamber endorsed a resolution calling upon the next legislature to pass an act for a permanent dredge to improve and maintain the inland waterways of the state.

After some discussion a special committee was named to take up the question of a new boulevard from Absecon to Somers Point, skirting the meadow side of the several municipalities between the two points. This committee is to confer with the Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce and the Hotel Men's Association, relative to such a boulevard, and then present the matter to the Atlantic County Board of Freeholders and ask for a preliminary survey of a route. The committee is James B. Madame, A. J. Renel, H. Naglee, Frank B. Hubin and Arthur Eldred.

The Chamber also passed a resolution to be forwarded to the Public Utilities Commission, requesting that an inspector be sent to this section to ascertain and report as to the trolley service rendered by the Shore Fast Line and the Atlantic and Suburban Line. In the case of the Shore Fast Line a fifteen minute service between Atlantic City and Pleasantville is requested, as well as adequate cars for seating the passengers who use the line.

Regarding the Atlantic and Suburban Line, it is requested that the road management be requested to furnish better service, and to improve the roadbed, especially along the Shore road, or else have a motor bus line substituted for the trolley line; also that the one man cars be abolished.

The Chamber accepted an invitation to hold its next quarterly meeting at Somers Point, at which time the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce will meet with the Atlantic County Chamber in joint session.
