It is reported that the supporters of the present county
court are preparing for publication a statement showing the
exact financial condition of the
county. We very seriously doubt
the truth of the report, but would
certainly welcome it if true.
Audacity and hardihood will go
a long way, sometimes, but hardly
to the extent suggested. As a
matter of fact the question of
taxation is the one of first importance with the people of this
county. It is a question of dollars
and cents in every household. It
is, or ought to be, year in and
year out, the leading issue with
the people. True their attention
is often diverted from it by false
or foolish outcries and clamors
and always when the day of reckoning comes they have time to
regret their mistake in not giving
the local tax question their first
and best consideration. The
county of Cabell is staggering
today under a great weight of
constantly increasing indebtedness. Let the tax payers of the
county, and every man is such a
tax payer directly or indirectly.
investigate the subject of how
much the county owes and how
providently or improvidently the
debt was created. A large array
of figures much more eloquent in
their significance than any public
speech can easily be discovered.
You can hear a public speech
almost any time and it is generally a pleasant diversion to do so
but it is a matter of real business
with you when the sheriff presents your tax ticket for collection.
Vote for the men whose names
are a guarantee of intelligent
economy in public affairs. To
come down to local instance and
illustration, vote for D. I. Smith
and W. T. Cox for members of
the county court.
